Anyone who wants to use toll roads in Switzerland must purchase a vignette. This applies to both residents of Switzerland as well as tourists and business travelers. Without a valid vignette for Switzerland, the respective roads cannot be used.
All motor vehicles with a permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons are subject to tolls on highways and national roads of classes 1 and 2. Those who are towing a trailer or caravan are additionally required to obtain a separate vignette for the trailer. There is also a special rule in Switzerland: motorcycles are subject to tolls as well, meaning they must also register for vignettes.
