If you plan to travel to Switzerland, you must either purchase a vignette or pay a heavy vehicle fee at customs to use the highways and other routes. We give you an overview of whether you can easily order a vignette for your vehicle from home or if you need to pay attention to the heavy vehicle fee.
There are various vehicle classes that fall under the vignette obligation. However, in general, vehicles up to 3.5 t GVM need a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 t GVM must pay a heavy vehicle fee. Please note that in Switzerland, only a 1-year vignette is available, and no other validity periods are possible.
In Switzerland, motorcyclists need a vignette.
Passenger car drivers also need a vignette for their trip in Switzerland as long as their vehicle weighs no more than 3.5 t GVM. If your vehicle weighs over 3.5 t GVM, you must pay a heavy vehicle fee, and the vignette obligation does not apply.
If you are traveling with your passenger car and a trailer, the toll regulations vary depending on the weight of the trailer.
A vignette for your towing vehicle (passenger car) and a vignette for your trailer are mandatory if your trailer weighs no more than 3.5 t GVM. Even if your towing vehicle weighs more than 3.5 t GVM and thus falls under the heavy vehicle fee, you still need a vignette for your trailer up to 3.5 t GVM. If your trailer also weighs more than 3.5 t GVM, a heavy vehicle fee applies to it as well.
If you are traveling to Switzerland with a motorhome, you must pay a heavy vehicle fee if it weighs over 3.5 t GVM, and the vignette obligation does not apply.
All vehicles with a weight over 3.5 t GVM are not subject to the vignette obligation but must pay a heavy vehicle fee.
For motor vehicles weighing over 3.5 t GVM, the flat-rate heavy vehicle fee (PSVA) applies. You must pay this fee either upon entry at customs or in advance online via the Via portal. The heavy vehicle fee is charged not only for driving on roads but also when the vehicle is stationary, such as in campsites.
With us, you can easily order your digital vignette from home and register it directly to your vehicle. Unlike the adhesive vignette, there is no need to scratch off the vignette from the windshield after the trip. The vignettes are divided into the following classes:
Additional fees apply for the use of special toll routes, meaning even if you have a vignette or have already paid the heavy vehicle fee, you will still need to pay for the special toll routes in Switzerland. You must pay an additional amount depending on the vehicle class for the Great St. Bernard Road Tunnel (Switzerland - Italy), the Munt-La-Schere Road Tunnel (Switzerland - Italy), and certain alpine passes.
The use of the Gotthard Tunnel for crossing into Italy is included in the Swiss vignette, so no additional fees apply for this tunnel.
