If you're traveling to Switzerland and plan to explore the country, you'll encounter many different tunnels and mountain passes. We'd like to give you an overview of the various tunnels and explain which tunnels are subject to the vignette requirement, when a Heavy Vehicle Fee applies, where you can use car trains, and when a special toll must be paid.
In Switzerland, most tunnels do not require a special toll but are only subject to the vignette. All vehicles up to 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight (GVW) must purchase a vignette to use the Swiss road network.
Unlike other countries, Switzerland does not have distance-based tolls. Instead, vehicles with a weight of over 3.5 tons GVW must pay a Heavy Vehicle Fee, and the vignette is not required. For more detailed information, please see our guide on the Heavy Vehicle Fee. The following tunnels are not subject to a special toll. You only need to purchase a vignette or pay the heavy vehicle charge:
In Switzerland, two tunnels are subject to special tolls. You need a separate pass to use these routes. The pass can cover a one-way trip, a round trip, or be valid for a year. Prices vary depending on the vehicle category, and in some cases, also depend on the day of the week or season. The Great St. Bernard Road Tunnel (Switzerland–Italy) and the Munt La Schera Road Tunnel (Switzerland–Italy) are both special toll routes. In addition, there are many Alpine mountain roads that require a special toll.
The prices for car train services vary depending on the vehicle category, tunnel, and day of the week. Therefore, it’s important to check the specific tunnel's regulations to determine which category your vehicle falls into. The following tunnels offer car train services:
