The Bözberg Tunnel is located in the north of Switzerland on the A3 motorway (from Basel to Sargans), between Basel and Zurich. The Bözberg Tunnel went into operation in 1996, providing a direct alternative to the previously used Belchen Tunnel, and offering a bypass around Brugg. The tunnel had been in planning since the 1950s and was completed after approximately 8 years. The initial route passed over the Bözberg Pass and then across the Aare Valley.
Since the existing Bözberg Tunnel did not meet the new clearance profile requirements (corner height of 4.0 meters), a new tunnel had to be constructed from May 2015 to May 2022. The project is estimated at a volume of approximately EUR 133.5 million. The new tunnel, approximately 2,700 meters (2.7 km) long, features two tubes spaced 30 to 50 meters apart and runs parallel to the existing railway tunnel.
The Bözberg Tunnel is subject to the vignette requirement (vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW) or payment of the heavy vehicle charge (vehicles over 3.5 t GVW), and is therefore toll-required. This means you must possess a valid vignette or pay the heavy vehicle charge to use the route.
Unlike special toll tunnels such as the Great St. Bernard Tunnel and Munt La Schera Tunnel, you do not have to pay additional fees beyond the vignette or heavy vehicle charge. The Bözberg Tunnel is not a special toll route.
