Where is the San Bernardino Tunnel located?
The San Bernardino Pass (mountain pass), which includes the San Bernardino Tunnel, is a road tunnel located in the south of Switzerland (in the canton of Graubünden). The road tunnel has a summit elevation of 2,066 meters above sea level (2 km) and is located just before the Italian border on Main Road 13. The San Bernardino Tunnel also runs parallel to Lake Laghetto Moesola. The tunnel connects the regions of Hinterrhein (Eastern Switzerland) with San Bernardino (Ticino) and has a total length of 6,600 meters (6.6 km). The tunnel is paved, suitable for caravans, and has connected the southern valleys of Graubünden — Misox and Calancatal — with the capital Chur since 1967.
Is the San Bernardino Tunnel subject to tolls?
The San Bernardino Tunnel is subject to the vignette requirement (vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW) or the payment of the heavy vehicle fee (vehicles over 3.5 t GVW) and is therefore toll required. This means you must have a vignette or pay the heavy vehicle fee to use this route.
Unlike special toll tunnels such as the Great St. Bernard Tunnel and the Munt La Schera Tunnel, no additional fees are required beyond the vignette or paid heavy vehicle fee. The San Bernardino Tunnel is not a special toll road.
