Valid from 01.12.2024 to 31.01.2026
On motorways and motorway-like roads with white-green signs, a vignette is compulsory for motor vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (GVW). A separate vignette is also required for trailers and caravans up to 3.5 t GVW. Trailers pulled by motorbikes are exempt from the vignette requirement. Motorhomes up to 3.5t GVW and motorbikes are also subject to the vignette obligation. No vignette is required for vehicles with a GVW of more than 3.5 t (including motorhomes and trailers). Instead, the toll fee must be paid via the heavy vehicle fee. An exception is made for work vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 t, which are not subject to the heavy vehicle charge, but are subject to the vignette. For some tunnels and roads, additional tolls are charged due to the high construction and maintenance costs.
The compulsory vignette on Swiss highways and freeways has been in place since 1985 to finance the cost of maintenance and operations, as well as the construction of new roads in Switzerland.
The vignette serves as proof of the permission to drive on highways and freeways in Switzerland. It is mandatory for vehicles and trailers below 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight. For vehicles over 3.5 tons GVW, the toll must be paid via the so-called heavy vehicle fee. An exception is made for work vehicles which are subject to the vignette obligation, over 3.5t GVW. Since 01.08.2023, vignette for vehicles and trailers under 3.5 tons GVW can be registered digitally on your license plate without having to attach an adhesive toll sticker. However, there is still the possibility to attach the adhesive vignette on the windshield and attain permission to use the roads.
Those who want to save the effort of sticking and later removing the adhesive vignette, can get the annual vignette for Switzerland in our store quickly and simply.
A distinction is made between adhesive vignettes and digital vignettes.
The adhesive vignette is stuck on the windshield in the case of vehicles up to 3.5 tons GVW.
In the case of a motorcycle, the adhesive vignette is affixed to an easily accessible and non-replaceable part of the motorcycle.
Our recommendation: The digital vignette can be purchased easily and conveniently from home or on the road via cell phone / smartphone.
In addition, buyers save themselves the trouble of sticking on and removing the vignette after the journey.
For these two tunnels, tolls are charged in addition to the vignette.
Whether you need a vignette or a digital vignette in Switzerland depends on which freeways or roads you will be driving on during your journey.
The white-green signage at the roadside signals the compulsory use of vignettes for vehicles up to 3.5t GVW.
You can get the annual vignette for Switzerland from our online store for €49.90.
Because you do not have to consider a longer waiting period until the digital vignette is valid when you buy it in our online store, you can still purchase it at quite short notice before you start your journey. However, it is important that you do not set off until you have received confirmation of registration from us.
No, taxes are levied on the price of the digital vignette. The tax is already included in our prices.
The vignette obligation also applies to motorcycles. With the adhesive vignette, it must be noted that the sticker needs to be attached to an easily accessible, non-replaceable part.
As long as your passenger car is below 3.5 tons GVW, the vignette obligation applies. If your car is over 3.5 tons GVW, you have to pay the heavy vehicle fee instead.
Whether you need a vignette or a heavy vehicle fee for your motorhome depends on the gross vehicle weight rating. Below 3.5 tons GVW. the vignette obligation applies. Above 3.5 tons, the heavy vehicle fee must be paid instead.
Similarly, for trucks the heavy vehicle fee must be paid, if the gross vehicle weight is equal to or exceeds 3.5 tonnes; if the gross vehicle weight is less than 3.5 tonnes, the vignette is compulsory.
Since most highways and freeways in Switzerland can only be driven on without penalty if you have a valid vignette, you will need the vignette on your way to many popular cities such as Zurich, Bern, Lucerne or Geneva.
Yes. The digital vignette is valid throughout all of Switzerland. For some tunnels, an additional toll is required.
Yes, the digital vignette is registered and bound to the respective license plate. With the digital vignette, there is the option of a one-time license plate change, as long as it stays with the same vehicle owner.
Your digital vignette is valid after your registration confirmation has been received, this usually takes place within a few minutes.
The annual vignette is valid for a whole calendar year. In addition, the annual vignette is valid from December 1 of the previous year until January 31 of the following year. The annual vignette 2023 is thus valid from December 1, 2022 to January 31, 2024.
Whether your digital vignette is already or still valid, can be checked on our subpage for the validity check, free of charge, provided that you have indicated that the e-vignette should be publicly visible. Especially for vehicles which are used by several people, it is therefore recommended to select the option "publicly viewable".
If you drive on the highways and freeways in Switzerland without a valid vignette in accordance with the vignette obligation, you must expect a fine.
The fine is currently 200 francs.
To check the validity of the adhesive vignette and the digital vignette, the BAZG carries out random checks at the border and the cantonal police conducts random checks inland. Initially, there will be no automated electronic checks.
