This year again, increased traffic is expected during the Easter holidays, and traffic jams have already been predicted. The good news? This year, Easter falls right in the middle of the holiday period, which means many travelers are already heading south rather than waiting for the public holidays. Still, heavy traffic is anticipated especially on Wednesday evening, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
In previous years (like in 2022), traffic jams at the Gotthard Tunnel heading south reached record levels of 22 km in length. Already this past Saturday (April 12, 2025), a 14 km tailback was recorded at the Gotthard North Portal. For travelers, that meant a 2-hour wait in a long line of impatient drivers. Understandably, many holidaymakers would prefer to avoid the Gotthard Tunnel altogether.
