Day eleven brings one of the absolute highlights of my trip: a ride on the legendary Glacier Express. As I board the train, I feel the excitement building for one of the most spectacular train routes in the world. The panoramic windows offer an unparalleled view of the majestic Alps, and I sit back to fully enjoy this unique experience. The train crosses the impressive Landwasser Viaduct, which looks like a work of engineering art, and takes us through the Oberalp Valley. The dramatic backdrop of steep gorges and towering mountains completely captivates me.
In Andermatt, my train journey ends, and for a brief moment, I wonder what happens next. But no worries – while I enjoyed the breathtaking train ride, my car has been brought here by a service, allowing me to seamlessly continue my journey. This small but important logistical detail ensures everything runs smoothly.
The journey continues through the dramatic Schöllenen Gorge, past the famous Devil’s Bridge. The ride through the Grindelwald Valley once again offers spectacular views of the Wetterhorn peaks. Eventually, I reach Lauterbrunnen, where the imposing Staubbach Falls plunge 300 meters into the depths – a truly magical place to end the day. My cozy hotel, the Romantik Schweizerhof in Grindelwald, is already waiting for me.
Day twelve of my trip starts leisurely, and I look forward to spending the entire day in Grindelwald, one of the most charming villages in the Bernese Alps. The fresh mountain air and the stunning landscape invite me to enjoy the day at my own pace and explore the surroundings. One of the main attractions here is the cogwheel train ride to the Jungfrau – an absolute must for anyone who loves alpine views. I briefly consider whether to make the journey to Jungfraujoch, the “Top of Europe,” where a breathtaking panorama awaits me. Once at the top, not only are the snow-covered peaks magnificent, but there’s also the famous Ice Palace and the Sphinx Observation Deck. The view from up here is truly spectacular, and it’s hard to put into words the vastness and beauty of the Alps.
Alternatively, there are many hiking trails that wind through the green valleys and up into the mountains. Nature lovers will find this region a paradise, with its incredibly diverse flora and fauna. For those who prefer a more relaxed day, a stroll through the village, visiting the picturesque shops, or simply sitting in a café and soaking in the breathtaking scenery are perfect options.
Grindelwald offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation – the ideal place to unwind and fully enjoy the last days of the trip. In the evening, I return to the Romantik Schweizerhof and end the day in complete relaxation.
