I must admit, I hadn't really considered Switzerland as a travel destination for a long time. Sure, it’s a small country, and I thought a long weekend would be enough to see the main attractions. But the more I dove into planning this trip, the more I realized: 14 days is the absolute minimum to truly enjoy the highlights of this country at a leisurely pace. So many impressive landscapes, charming cities, and cultural treasures are waiting here! As the starting point for my adventure, I chose Lucerne – a city known for its picturesque location on Lake Lucerne.
After about 2 hours by car from my hometown Freiburg, I arrive in Lucerne and am immediately captivated by the stunning scenery. The city greets me with its sparkling lake and majestic mountains in the background – a real picture-perfect moment! But first, I want to check into my hotel. It’s a cozy, family-run place with a small restaurant on the ground floor serving typical Swiss cuisine.
After checking in and a quick break to freshen up, I look forward to my first dinner in Switzerland. The menu at the hotel restaurant promises traditional Swiss delights, and I can't resist: Rösti with raclette cheese and a cold glass of Rivella – the perfect welcome meal! The hearty flavors and the cozy atmosphere set the tone for the days to come.
Full and satisfied, I soon head to bed, as the adventure is about to truly begin the next day. Although my excitement for the upcoming discoveries keeps me awake for a bit, I eventually drift off – ready for everything that awaits me the next morning.
On the second day of my adventure, a very special highlight is on the agenda: the ascent to the summit of Stanserhorn. After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, I head to the valley station. There, a special cable car awaits me – the first of its kind to be powered by solar energy and open, allowing me to breathe in the fresh mountain air during the ride. The view becomes more and more impressive with every meter of altitude, and soon I have a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. On clear days, you can even see as far as the Alsace and the Black Forest!
Once at the top, the view is simply overwhelming. I breathe in the fresh mountain air deeply and set off to explore the hiking trails. It’s amazing how peaceful it is up here – and with a bit of luck, I even spot a few marmots playing among the rocks. I also listen to a ranger’s talk, who introduces me to the fascinating flora and fauna of the region.
In the afternoon, I return to Lucerne and take time to explore the medieval old town. Especially impressive are the old wooden bridges and the famous Lion Monument, which was erected in honor of fallen Swiss soldiers. I end the day by relaxing by the lake – with a delicious ice cream in hand and a view of the shimmering water. A perfect conclusion to an eventful day!
